After finishing on the podium in the first two editions of the FIVB U23 Women’s Volleyball World Championship the Dominican Republic team is aiming to the highest position at the event to take place in Slovenia.
The Dominicans lost to China in straight sets in the gold medal match of the inaugural event held in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico in 2013 and two years ago lost to Brazil in five sets in the semifinals before winning in five sets over Japan in the bronze medal contest in Ankara, Turkey.
The core of the team consists of most of the players that won the U20 World Championship held in Puerto Rico, when they edged Brazil in five sets after saving two match-points with the towering Brayelin Martinez and left-handed Gaila Gonzalez as the main offensive weapons.
The Dominicans arrive in Slovenia as three-time champions of the women’s Pan American Cup winning the 2016 tournament held in Peru with a 3-0 victory over Argentina. They had won the two previous events also in Peru defeating Colombia and Brazil in the decisive matches.
